The veteran driver began the 2001 NASCAR Busch Series season bent on making a run for a championship in the No. 66 Phillips 66 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Instead, the Cicci-Welliver Racing team released him at the first of June.
Fedewa frantically scrambled to find another ride and did just that when he hooked up with Billy Jones, the owner of Buckshot Racing's No. 00 Chevrolet.
Fedewa made his first start for Buckshot Racing at Milwaukee on July 1 and made a handful of other runs for the team, highlighted by his seventh-place finish (Aug. 4) in the Kroger 200 at Indianapolis Raceway Park.
Despite his strong showing in the No. 00 entry, Fedewa, who has been competing in the Busch Series full time since 1993, still has no definite plans for 2002.
"It has been very frustrating," said Fedewa, who finished seventh in the Busch points standings in 1995 and 1998.
Fedewa said his best lead for a ride right now is with the Buckshot Racing team again in the Busch ranks.
"I have talked with Billy Jones and we are trying to put a deal together to run his Busch car in 2002," said Fedewa.
"That would be a great opportunity for me if we could make things work out and that is the deal I am working the hardest on right now. When we teamed up last year, we showed some great results and we trust one another. We just are trying to track down a sponsor and get money, that is what everything depends on."
Fedewa, who has four career Busch wins and four poles on his resume, also is exploring other options.
"I am also looking at a possible Winston Cup deal and another Busch deal," said Fedewa. "The bottom line is that I am trying to find a job period. So, if anything comes along I am going to take a look at it."
Although the 2002 season is fast approaching, Fedewa is trying to keep his job search in perspective.
"There are people in this country hurting a lot more than me," said Fedewa. "I have had a lot of good things happen to me in my career and once in awhile you are going to have some hard times. I have a lot of faith and I am a very determined person and I am confident once the economy improves, I will get something worked out.
"It is hard to say how long I could wait for a 2002 ride, but I would like to get something going by the first or second week of January, so we could get ready for the season-opening (Busch) race at Daytona (February 16)."
