Grubb searching for the right situation

For three years, Kevin Grubb has been a fixture in the No. 37 Timber Wolf Chevrolet in the NASCAR Busch Series.

With each passing season, improvement was evident as Grubb finished 17th, 13th and 14th in the points chase in those the three seasons. But a fourth campaign in the No. 37 car owned by Brewco Motorsports wasn't meant to be for Grubb.

"They (Brewco Motorsports) gave me a contract before the end of last season," said Grubb, who is 23-years old. "But I felt the changes weren't being made to make the team better, so we couldn't get a contract worked out."

Now, Grubb, like many drivers, is trying to land an elusive ride for the upcoming 2002 slate.

"Right now, I don't have anything locked down," said Grubb, whose top BGN finish was second at Dover in 1998. "My main objective is to find a situation that I am comfortable with and it is a team where I can win a lot of races. I am looking at all three of the major NASCAR series from the Trucks, to Busch and Cup."

Grubb believes his experience in the Busch ranks and his age should benefit him in his job search.

"I think the fact that I have raced at a lot of Busch races at tracks all over the country is very helpful," said Grubb, who had three top-five outings in 2001. "Plus, with my age and experience I think I would be a good fit for a team that wants a younger driver, but doesn't want to go with a rookie."

Grubb has had some decent leads on employment, but nothing has been finalized.

"I had some offers in the Truck and Busch Series," said Grubb. "But they were just deals that would not work for me."

Meanwhile, Grubb is trying to keep a positive spin on his plight.

"Anytime you don't have a job it is very frustrating," said Grubb. "But right now the economy in America is terrible and there are a lot teams looking for sponsors. It seems like I am on the phone all day, everyday, trying to see what job opportunities are out there."

Although the season-opening Truck, Busch and Cup events at Daytona are fast approaching, Grubb has yet to hit the panic button.

"I definitely want to run a full season in one of those series," said Grubb. "But at the same time, I am not ready to just jump the gun and get in a ride I am not comfortable with. I really want to find something that fits me."
