Doug Hewitt is leaving his position with Petty Enterprises as the head of its Research and Engineering Developmental Program. He is expected to go work for Joe Gibbs Racing as crew chief for Coy Gibbs.

Gibbs, son of Joe Gibbs Racing owner Joe Gibbs, has competed in the Craftsman Truck Series this year with two top-fives and seven top-10s.

Hewitt has served as crew chief in 235 Winston Cup races for drivers such as Michael Waltrip, Johnny Benson and Kyle Petty. The younger Gibbs is expected to leave the Craftsman Truck Series and move to the Busch Series next year with Hewitt calling the shots for the team.
