Ashton Lewis Jr. struggled mightily to make a go of his small family-run team in 2000 and was relatively successful. He made 11 starts -- doubling his career total -- with a best finish of 17th at Michigan. He started a career-best 11th at Darlington and added a 13th place start at Indianapolis Raceway Park.
Lewis, who failed to qualify for 11 events in 2000, has an interesting background that includes a Mechanical Engineering degree from Old Dominion University. He began his career in karts and road raced domestically and in Europe before returning to the U.S. and the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series at Langley Speedway in Hampton, Va.
Lewis collaborated with his brother Charlie to build a Late Model Stock Car as a college project and they used the car to good effect at Langley. Lewis also has time as the team engineer for Akins Motorsports, another Busch Series team.
