Andy Santerre started 2001 with a new lease on life as the part-owner of his own Busch Series team with North Carolina businessman Mike Reece. Santerre quickly enlisted the aid of a fellow Maine native, veteran mechanic Stan Meserve, to engineer his No. 01 Chevrolets. The former Busch Series Rookie of the year planned to run a limited schedule of between eight and 15 Busch Series races, plus selected Busch North Series events for himself and employee Tom Carey Jr., like Santerre a former BNS race winner and most popular driver award winner.
Santerre continues to rebuild his career from serious injuries he suffered in an accident early in the 1999 NAPA 300 at Daytona International Speedway. In 2000, he competed in 14 Busch Series events for Team Rensi Motorsports. He amassed one top-5 and four top-10 finishes. Santerre has 10 victories in the Busch North Series and was 1994 rookie of the year there. He won a Busch Series race in 1999 at Pikes Peak International Raceway.
