Jay Sauter made the mistake of running for Busch Series Rookie of the Year in arguably the best rookie class in the history of the series. In 2000 he started 31 races and finished a creditable 16th overall but fourth in the rookie standings due to the great seasons posted by Kevin Harvick (third), Ron Hornaday (fifth) and Jimmie Johnson (10th).
Driving No. 43 Chevrolets, Sauter scored one top-5 and eight top-10 finishes. The Craftsman Truck Series graduate got off to a great start posting a career best fourth place finish at Daytona in the season opening NAPA 300. He started a career best third at Texas, site of his former track record and a victory in the CTS the season before. Sauter led three times for 25 laps.
The son of veteran Midwest racer Jim Sauter and brother of 2001 Busch Series Rookie of the Year candidate Tim Sauter, raced in the ASA ACDelco Challenge Series prior to moving to the CTS, where he scored four wins in 86 races while driving for owner Richard Childress.
