Mike Dillon struggled in 2000 in his No. 21 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet to achieve results similar to 1998, when he scored a career best 12th in the Busch Series point standings. Dillon made 31 of 32 races and scored two top-10 finishes on his way to 23rd in the standings.

Dillon, car owner Childress' son-in-law who is often employed by the team owner as a test driver for his Winston Cup cars, began the season on a high note with a ninth place finish at Daytona. He was eighth in driver points following race No. five at Darlington, but a string of six accidents dropped him to 23rd in points by race No. 16 and the driver from Lexington, N.C., never recovered. He did lead a total of 11 laps, three at California and eight at Dover and placed a career best eighth at the second Dover race.

Dillon, who won more than 200 AMA motocross races before moving into stock cars, was formerly a terror in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Late Model Stock Car division. He was rookie of the year in his opening year in stock cars at New River Valley Speedway in Coeburn, Va., and won a track championship at Tri-County Motor Speedway in Hudson, N.C.
