Matt Kenseth had to get out of the Busch Series in 2000 to elude Dale Earnhardt Jr. for a championship, but Kenseth still competed in 20 races and totaled an impressive four wins, 10 top-5 and 17 top-10 finishes, good enough for 17th in the standings while driving the No. 17 Chevrolet for Reiser Enterprises.
Kenseth, who after losing the Busch Series championship to Earnhardt Jr. for two straight years defeated "Little E" for the Winston Cup Rookie of the Year honors, opened the season with a win at Daytona. He then grabbed the first of two poles at Atlanta.
Kenseth, a native of Cambridge, Wis., who made a name for himself in Midwest Late Model racing before he moved south, defending his 1999 Busch win at California with his second win of 2000. He made his 100th series start at Richmond. Kenseth led 102 of 200 laps before winning the second Dover event at the site of his stunning Cup debut in 1998. He won the pole and his second straight race at Charlotte in the fall on his way to leading 12 races for a total of 331 laps.
