Mike McLaughlin continued to struggle to get his career back on track in 2000, driving for the first year for owner George deBidart in the No. 48 Chevrolet. He started 31 races and ended up 24th in the point standings with a season best finish of second at Nashville, three top-5 and five top-10 finishes.
McLaughlin, who had a successful six-year career with Cicci-Welliver racing prior to joining Innovative Motorsports, started a season best eighth at his home track, Watkins Glen International. The futility of his season was typified by his failure to lead a single lap.
Prior to moving south to compete in the Busch Series, the Waterloo, N.Y., native had a lengthy career racing Supermodifieds and Modifieds on both dirt and asphalt. He was the 1988 Featherlite Modified Series champion with 16 career victories and finished fourth and third in the Busch North Series in 1992-93, respectively, when he was also that series' most popular driver.
