Mike Wallace is excited about being back in the Winston Cup Series in 2001, his only concern has to be getting up to speed with a team that scored only one top-5 finish in 2000.
Wallace hopes to transfer the momentum he gained in 2000 with owner Jim Smith's Craftsman Truck Series team into the Winston Cup Series. Wallace won the CTS's inaugural visit to Daytona International Speedway in the thrilling Daytona 250 and scored two other victories on his way to fourth in the standings.
Wallace's move to Ultra Motorsports in 1999 didn't take long to pay dividends. He won the season-opening race at Homestead-Miami Speedway and led the standings for the first time. Wallace has been a big winner in stock cars before, most notably when he teamed with Barry Owen in the mid-1990s as a force in the Busch Series and ARCA.
Wallace's best result in more than 70 previous Winston Cup starts was fifth at Atlanta Motor Speedway while winning more than $1 million in WCS competition.
He owns a trio of Busch Series victories, one of which came at Indianapolis Raceway Park. In 1990, Wallace -- one of three racing brothers with Rusty and Kenny -- won the Mid-America Region championship of the NASCAR Winston Racing Series.
