After Rich Bickle's catastrophic 2000 season, in which he scored two top-5 finishes in just five starts while failing to qualify 11 times in his own Bickle-Smith Motorsports cars, he is looking ahead to driving the No. 59 ST Motorsports Chevrolets in 2001 after being reunited with long-time crew chief Phil Hammer.
Bickle showed he could get it done on consecutive weeks in June, when he scored career best fifth place results at South Boston, Va., and Myrtle Beach, S.C. While he has shown well in a couple stand-in roles in the Winston Cup Series, Bickle has struggled since he finished second for Darrell Waltrip Motorsports in the 1997 Craftsman Truck Series.
He and Hammer were responsible for a great number of the more than 225 short track races Bickle has won in the Midwest and South and team owner Tad Geschickter is hoping they can get his entry back into the top-10 after it fell to 12th with Phil Parsons.
