Scott Wimmer concentrated on his rookie American Speed Association season in 2000, but he started the final three Busch Series races of the season for owner Bill Davis preparatory to running the full season in 2001. Wimmer, who did an extensive test program for Davis in 2000, greatly impressed the owner in the Winston Cup season finale at Atlanta, when he qualified for the Cup race almost on a whim by his team after qualifying for the ARCA race he was actually entered in was rained out.
Wimmer, who finished second to Joey Clanton in the ASA rookie race, had his best Busch finish, 18th, in his debut at Memphis. He led for two laps in his second race, at Phoenix before he crashed early in his third and final race of the year, at Homestead, Fla.
