Tony Raines, another Midwestern transplant from LaPorte, Ind., slid back from 12th in his rookie Busch Series season to finish 15th in 2000. He started all 32 races during his sophomore season and notched two career bests by starting and finishing second at South Boston, Va.
In the end, Raines, who cut his NASCAR teeth in the Craftsman Truck Series, scored only a single top-5 finish this season. Despite that, he was eighth in the points midway through the season, but three DNFs dropped him back. He led five times for 154 laps, including 123 laps in his breakthrough effort at South Boston driving his second season for BACE Motorsports and car owner Bill Baumgardner.
The 1999 Busch Series Rookie of the Year also scored four victories in two seasons in the Craftsman Truck Series, where he had a best season finish of fifth in 1998. He scored three wins and the season championship in 1996 in the ASA ACDelco Challenge Series.
