Coy Gibbs has parlayed his father, Super Bowl and Winston Cup championship winner Joe Gibbs, into a career in motorsports. The 2000 season was one of learning for Gibbs, who shared driving responsibilities for his father's No. 20 Chevrolet trucks with his brother J.D. His team ran half the schedule and improved as the year concluded, with Coy ending up 27th in points based on 12 starts.
One of the schedule's toughest tracks, Chicago Motor Speedway, provided the stage for Gibbs' best finish, 13th place. On several occasions, he and older brother J.D. started the same event. Coy Gibbs won 1999 rookie of the year honors in the Slim Jim All Pro Series where his best finish, sixth, was one of three top-10 efforts. He also won two Bud Pole Awards.
Gibbs brings a linebacker's intensity to NASCAR in that he's a hard-charger and also rolls up his sleeves to work on his equipment. He was a four-year starting linebacker at Stanford University, where he contributed to several of the best defensive units in Cardinal history.
