The past season was one of uncertainty for David Starr, who began 2000 without a permanent seat. However, thanks to some scintillating runs he seems to have settled into the No. 41 Dodge fielded by crew chief Todd Meyers for owner Mike Farris. Driving for uncle Mike Starr, his Chevrolet completed just 10 laps of the Daytona 250 before its engine expired. Starr later started eight races for Michigan-based Conely Racing, posting back-to-back 11th-place finishes at Memphis Motorsports Park and Texas Motor Speedway.
Starr, a native of Houston, Texas, moved into the TKO Motorsports Dodge for the year's final two events and qualified second for the O'Reilly 400 at Fort Worth, Texas. Starr ended the season 29th in points and still looking for his first top-10 finish, but the instructor at his uncle's Texas Motor Speedway driving school made great progress through the season.
Starr and Joey Sonntag, a pair of Texans, joined forces to pursue rookie of the year honors in 1999. Starr, competing in 24 events, finished 14th in his hometown race at Texas Motor Speedway in June. He had three top-10 qualifying runs, including an eighth-place start in the second Fort Worth round. Starr won the Texas Race of Champions at Texas World Speedway in 1996, won a Winston West race at Las Vegas and has also competed in several Automobile Club of America events. He enjoys water skiing and plays tennis.
