Ultra Motorsports plans to give Ted Musgrave his best opportunity to win races and a NASCAR Touring championship by fielding a No. 1 Mopar Performance Parts Dodge Ram for the 45-year-old native of Evanston, Ill., in 2001 in the Craftsman Truck Series.
2001 will be the first time Musgrave starts more than two truck races in a season. Previously, the Winston Cup and Busch Series veteran scored top-5 finishes in successive years at Phoenix International Raceway in 1995 (fourth) and 1996 (fifth). He has made a total of three career starts in the series and his best NWCS championship finish in nine full-time seasons was seventh for Roush in 1995.
Musgrave made 18 starts in the Winston Cup Series in 2000, primarily filling-in for the late Kenny Irwin in the Team SABCO Chevrolets. Musgrave's career has wandered somewhat since he was fired by Jack Roush midway through the 1998 Winston Cup season. He joined veteran mechanic Fred Wanke after being hired by Ultra's Jimmy Smith in December.
