Jeff Purvis, who with car owner James Finch was once a threat to win virtually everywhere they showed up to race, will campaign a No. 51 Ford in a limited schedule of races for the Florida panhandle car owner in 2001.

Finch and Purvis, a native of Clarksville, Tenn., originally teamed on dirt tracks and followed a path to NASCAR's highest divisions. Purvis has raced full-time in the Busch Series since 1996 and will continue that role in 2001 driving No. 4 Pontiacs for Joe Gibbs Racing.

In 2000, Purvis finished 11th in the Busch Series with four top-5 and 11 top-10 finishes despite missing three races. He scored three second place finishes, at such diverse venues as The Milwaukee Mile, Gateway International Raceway and Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Finch has decided to pick-and-choose his racing venues in a number of series and tested at Daytona in January with Purvis, who has finished a career best sixth and 11th in the Busch Series points the past two seasons.

Purvis was once one of the country's most successful dirt track drivers. He dominated major dirt events in the mid-1980s driving for Finch and won the prestigious World 100 at Rossburg, Ohio, three times (1983, '84, '86) and won championships in the National Dirt Racing Association (NDRA) in 1984-85.

Purvis made the transition to pavement racing in the late 1980s, running in selected Slim Jim All-Pro Series events. Purvis also won three ARCA RE/MAX Series races in consecutive seasons, with his first victory occurring at Daytona in 1993. He was the O'Reilly Auto Parts All-Star Series champion in 1986 and has more than 350 short-track victories.

Purvis gained much of his experience under the direction of Alabama racing legends Bobby Allison and the late Neil Bonnett. He has six career poles in the Busch Series since 1994. He also has two career wins on the circuit, at Michigan and Richmond in 1996, his first full year in the series.

Purvis has enjoyed success in many different racing divisions including ARCA, Slim Jim All-Pro Series, NASCAR Busch Series, and the NASCAR Winston Cup Series.
