The fireworks could be spectacular in the garage surrounding A.J. Foyt's No. 14 Pontiacs. The temperaments of Foyt and his driver, Ron Hornaday, are legendary in NASCAR circles, but so is their success.
Hornaday is a two-time champion in the Craftsman Truck Series who comes to Foyt, who has won in open-wheel circles and sports cars along with numerous stock car triumphs, including the 1972 Daytona 500, off a successful debut season in the Busch Series.
Hornaday appears ready for the new challenge. In his first Busch Series season and his last with Dale Earnhardt Inc., Hornaday finished fifth in the Busch Series standings, won twice and scored six top-5 and 13 top-10 finishes.
Hornaday was a standard-setter in the truck series, winning championships in 1996 and 1998 for DEI and establishing the series' record for victories with 25. He made the first of 10 career Winston Cup starts in 1992 at Sears Point and made a single start last season, posting a career best 13th place start while subbing for injured Terry Labonte at Watkins Glen.
Hornaday, who totaled 64 top-5 and 90 top-10s in the truck series, was also voted 1997 most popular driver in the CTS. He raced karts and motorcycles before beginning his stock car career driving Modifieds at Saugus (Calif.) Speedway. He won Featherlite Southwest Series titles in 1992 and 1993 and was second in the Winston West Series standings and was voted most popular driver in that series in 1994. The son of former NWW champion Ron Hornaday has 17 career Winston West victories.
