Rick Mast got his Winston Cup start in 1988, driving two races for Baker-Schiff. In 1989, Mast finished sixth in the Daytona 500 in an unsponsored car, his best finish of 13 races started that season for Travis Carter. Mast then drove 20 races for three different teams in 1990, finishing 31st in points.

In 1991, Mast hooked up with Richard Jackson, an association which would last for six years and 181 races. Mast was consistent during that time, finishing 18th twice in the championship and no worse than 22nd during that time frame. Mast's best season was in 1994, when he won the pole for the inaugural Brickyard 400, finished second by inches to Dale Earnhardt at Rockingham and posted three third-place finishes.

Mast then moved to Butch Mock Motorsports for two years, earning championship finishes of 32nd and 33rd over two seasons. In 1999, Mast drove for Carl Yarborough, finishing 32 in points, thanks to two top-10 finishes.

In 2000, Mast drove five races for Larry Hedrick and 24 for A.J. Foyt, posting a pair of top-10 finishes for Foyt en route to a 33rd-place finish in points.

Mast, who traded a cow for his first race car, started racing at age 16, driving a '57 Chevrolet in the hobby division at Natural Bridge (Va.) Speedway and at Eastside Speedway. At 17, Mast won the track Sportsman championship. He moved to the Busch Series in 1984, winning nine Busch Series races and finishing in the top 11 in points six consecutive seasons.
