Robert Pressley's Winston Cup career has moved ahead by inches, but the former short track terror made a quantum leap in 2000 when he was paired with crew chief Ryan Pemberton in the Jasper Motorsports No. 77 Fords.

Pressley finished a career-high 25th in Winston Cup points and had a top finish of fifth in the June race at Michigan, where he led five laps near the end of the 400 miles before being passed by eventual winner Tony Stewart. Pressley had several strong qualifying runs, starting ninth in the summer race at Bristol and third at Phoenix.

Pressley is the son of short-track ace Bob Pressley. He was a dominant force at short tracks near his home in Asheville, N.C., winning track championships at New Asheville Speedway and Greenville-Pickens (S.C.) Speedway before forming a Busch Series team co-owned by Cleveland Cavaliers center Brad Daugherty.

Pressley became a consistent winner on the Busch Series before being named to fill Winston Cup legend Harry Gant's seat a full year before the veteran retired. In seven years Pressley has struggled to achieve his forecast promise, with a best finish of third in that time and two outside-pole starts.

Pressley, an amateur landscaper who once drove a Coca-Cola delivery truck, battled Ricky Craven for rookie of the year in 1995.
