Terry Labonte and his No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet team are in serious need of a rebound year in 2001 after he had his worst point finish in seven years last season.
The Corpus Christi, Texas, native dropped to 17th in the point standings and had only three top-5 and six top-10 finishes as his team struggled with personnel issues, coming to grips with the 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo and new Goodyear tires. Worst of all to outside observers, Labonte's string of 655 straight race starts came to an end when he suffered a head injury at Daytona in July.
While he was reunited with crew chief Gary DeHart, who was with him for both his Winston Cup championships, Labonte suffered through his first winless season since 1993. Labonte missed races at Indianapolis and
Watkins Glen, but came back to post a fifth place finish at Talladega in October, his best finish since returning from his injuries, which included a broken leg.
Labonte won the 26th pole of his career at his "home track," Texas Motor Speedway, and also went over the $23 million mark in career winnings during the season, his 23rd in the series.
Labonte has driven for owner Rick Hendrick since 1994. He won a Winston Cup championship for Hendrick in 1996 and also won the crown for owner Billy Hagan, for whom he broke into the series in 1978, in 1984.
Labonte is a former winner of The Winston all star race and Busch Clash and is also a International Race of Champions champion, in 1989.
