 1968 SEASON SUMMARY

•Curtis Turner makes the cover of "Sports Illustrated Magazine," the first time a Grand National driver has graced the cover of America's leading sports weekly magazine.

• Construction begins on new tracks in Talladega, Ala.; Brooklyn, Mich.; and Dover, Del. -- and ideas for an extravagant facility in Ontario, Calif., are on the drawing board.

• Cale Yarborough wins four superspeedway races (Daytona 500, Atlanta 500, Firecracker 400 and Southern 500) to establish a Grand National record.

• David Pearson bags his second Grand National championship and wins 16 races over the course of the 49-race season.

• On Nov. 25, Richard Petty announces he will switch from Plymouth to Ford during the 1969 Grand National season.
