• For the first time since 1949, three women compete in the same Winston Cup race when Janet Guthrie, Lella Lombardi and Christine Beckers drive in the Firecracker 400 at Daytona International Speedway on July 4.

• Cale Yarborough scores his second straight Winston Cup championship, winning nine times in 30 starts.

• Yarborough is the first and remains the only man to score 5,000 points during the course of the season under the current point system.

• Yarborough does not record a single DNF during the course of the Winston Cup season. It is the first time a driver was running at the finish in all events since Herman Beam completed all 51 starts in 1962.
