Watkins Glen International today continues a road-racing tradition that dates back to 1948 -- when sports cars competed on the streets of the village at the southern tip of scenic Lake Seneca.
The tradition began when a law student named Cameron Argetsinger had a vision to open a challenging course encompassing asphalt, cement and dirt roads in and around Watkins Glen. His dream was realized 50 years ago and the circuit has grown to become one of the most respected facilities in the northeast.
Over the years, The Glen has hosted a variety of significant road racing series including the Formula One United States Grand Prix (from 1961-1980) and the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. NASCAR made its first appearance at The Glen in 1957 and the Winston Cup Series returned in 1986. Now known as Global Crossing @ The Glen, the NASCAR Winston Cup Series race anchors a schedule that includes the NASCAR Busch Series, the ARCA RE/MAX Series and two Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series races, including the Six Hours at The Glen.

Watkins Glen International, NY

One of only two road courses on the NASCAR Winston Cup Series circuit, Watkins Glen features the unusual distinction of having seven right-hand turns within its eleven corners. The combination always challenges drivers' road-racing skills. It is also regarded as one of the finest spectator tracks on the NASCAR circuit.
Location: Fifteen miles north of Elmira on Route 14, 18 miles northeast of Corning on Route 414, 40 miles south of Geneva on Route 14. Once in Watkins Glen International, take Route 414 to County Route 16, turn right and go two miles to the track. From Rochester and Interstate 390, take exit 42 (Cooper's Plains) off Route 17 and proceed east to the race track.
