Going into Daytona this year, Team Kelly Racing was counting its lucky stars. After all, at the conclusion of last season, they lost their primary sponsors and went into the New Hampshire race thinking it was the team's last. But in the off-season, they rallied. They found new sponsors, hired two key people and regained their focus. Since then, TKR has shaken some of its bad luck and has enjoyed a modest string of racing success.

But behind Joe's back, and against his wishes, Billy built a car for Trish to race in the QualTech Short Track Series. To make matters worse, the car was secretly sponsored by Jeb McSwain. When Joe found out, he fired Trish. When Trish found out, she split with Billy. Trish ended up winning the QualTech Championship, but that has done nothing to convince Joe that she should race for him.
